Designed to equip our students with a strong foundation in visual literacy and communication, our Lower Secondary Art curriculum encourages them to engage with the world through curiosity, critical thinking and creativity.
Our students explore both traditional and contemporary art-making, while developing technical mastery and conceptual fluency. Through inquiry-based and process-driven learning, they reflect on their creative journeys, refine their artistic voice and grow through experimentation and iteration.
Beyond skills, our curriculum deepens students’ appreciation of the visual arts and their role in shaping culture, identity and society. Additionally, we nurture a sense of wonder and cultural awareness, empowering our students to contribute meaningfully to a flourishing human and natural world.
Programme Overview
Our Lower Secondary Art (LSA) curriculum is designed to empower our students with a strong foundation in visual literacy and visual communication, equipping them to navigate and contribute meaningfully to a visually dynamic world. Aligned with Raffles Institution’s vision to develop Learners, Leaders, and Pioneers, the programme fosters experimentation, cultural awareness, and conceptual depth, ensuring that students not only appreciate the visual arts but also understand their power in shaping society, identity, and discourse.
Students explore traditional and contemporary art-making, engage in inquiry-based learning, and develop both technical skills and conceptual fluency. With process-based learning as a key component, students document their creative processes, develop independent ideas, and refine their artistic voice through continuous reflection and exploration.
About the Programme
Our LSA curriculum provides students with a comprehensive foundation in visual literacy and visual communication, structured to develop key competencies in:
Visual Literacy:
- Understanding and interpreting visual elements, symbolism, and artistic intent
- Exploring diverse artistic perspectives, from local to international influences
Visual Communication:
- Expressing ideas effectively through composition, design, and material exploration
- Experimenting with traditional media, digital platforms, and interdisciplinary approaches
- Applying design thinking and storytelling techniques to create engaging, impactful artworks
We provide opportunities for our students to explore diverse art forms, engaging with both traditional and contemporary practices. Lessons are crafted to inspire curiosity, originality, and self-expression, encouraging our students to think creatively and critically. By reflecting on the cultural and ethical dimensions of visual media, our students gain a sense of responsibility and purpose in their artistic endeavours.
The Lower Secondary Art Curriculum at RI is a dynamic and forward-thinking programme that prepares students to think critically, create with purpose, and engage with the visual world in meaningful ways. Through this journey, students develop the confidence and curiosity to innovate, lead, and pioneer new artistic possibilities.
