English Language & Linguistics
Our English Language & Linguistics (ELL) Programme explores how words can hurt, provoke, persuade and heal. In a world where meaning is constantly negotiated, learning how language works is more important than ever, for it shapes our ideas, beliefs and emotions.
About the Programme
Our English Language & Linguistics (ELL) Programme explores how words can hurt, provoke, persuade and heal. In a world where meaning is constantly negotiated, learning how language works is more important than ever, for it shapes our ideas, beliefs and emotions.
Students investigate what it means to use language appropriately as they explore semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. They uncover how language reflects power, politics, gender and attitudes through real-world texts, from advertisements and conversations to political speeches and online discourse.
Distinct from English Literature, ELL examines all forms of communication—spoken and written, formal and informal. Through this, our students grow into discerning language users who listen empathically, speak purposefully and write with insight in a world shaped by words.
