Ethan Chia (1E) made his first SEA Games debut in sailing this year, where he represented Singapore. He shares with us about his sailing journey and the lessons he learned along the way.
Ethan competed at the SEA Games in sailing, a sport he enjoys because it gives him the opportunity to meet new friends.
1. How did you pick up sailing? What started your passion and interest in the sport?
I picked up sailing from my cousins and brothers. When I was seven, I saw my brothers sail, which piqued my interest in the sport.
2. What do you enjoy most about sailing?
It is a nice environment for meeting friends and gives me a sense of calmness.
3. Are there any lessons or key learning points that you have attained from sailing?
I have learned that sailing requires a lot of focus and mental strength.
4. How do you juggle competitive sailing and school work? Are there periods where doing so has been exceptionally challenging?
Thankfully, I have learned to plan my time well, so I am able to juggle sailing and school work. However, it does get challenging during exam period.
5. How was your experience at the SEA Games? Were there any challenges that you faced during the competition?
It was nice to make new friends and learn from my own mistakes. During the SEA Games, I also learned how to cover my opponents.
6. What did you enjoy most about the SEA Games? What were your key learning points and takeaways?
I most enjoyed playing with and talking to my seniors. I also learned that preparation = luck and success.
7. Do you ever feel burnt out from competitive sailing? What drives you to keep going?
Yes, I do feel burnt out at times. But what drives me is the support from my family and friends, and having a desire to do my nation proud.
8. What are your future plans in sailing? Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
If given the opportunity, I would like to try windsurfing. I hope I would be at the Olympics or the next SEA Games.
